DevOps Look at the World Differently

DevOps is such an undefined job title. Application operator, or site reliability engineer (SRE), perhaps more accurately describe the job role. Yet, when people are asked to describe their job, they often say DevOps. In the recently published ebook Monitoring & Management with Docker & Containers, we reviewed a year-old James Turnbull survey about monitoring and found that DevOps do look at the world differently than everyone else. Compared to their IT operations-focused peers, DevOps are more likely to monitor cloud infrastructure (65 percent vs. 53 percent) and less likely to care about networking (56 percent vs. 72 percent). The data points to a world where sysadmins are relegated to managing servers, while DevOps take over managing the new cloud infrastructure sans servers. If that is the case, some of today’s DevOps engineers may be part of tomorrow’s SRE teams, while a smaller subset will continue to be app operators bridging the DevOps gap.
